Summary

EEM engaged with community stakeholders in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut to identify and incorporate key community issues and opportunities into a land management plan.

Approach and Solution

EEM initiated a multi-stakeholder engagement process in 2 communities in the Kivalliq region on behalf of the Regional Inuit Association charged with administering Inuit land-claims in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut. The goal of the engagement was to identify key community issues and opportunities related to economic development along the two major watersheds in the region. The Kivalliq region is currently undergoing intensive mining exploration and development with significant potential for environmental and community impact.

Results

The results of community engagement activities were used as input to EEM’s ongoing development of a Thelon and Kazan River watershed management plan. Community engagement helped assure that development in the region is consistent with community wishes and needs.
