Cree communities – Environmental assessments

Summary

EEM has prepared several environmental assessments for projects in the Cree communities of Northern Quebec.

Approach and Solution

EEM has prepared several environmental assessments for projects in the Cree communities, including new gas bar and convenience stores, hotel expansions and recreational facilities. The assessments are required under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The projects involve a site visit to evaluate the suitability of several potential sites. The physical, social and biological environments are studied to determine the environmental effects of each project, including possible cumulative impacts from other proposed projects. Mitigation measures are proposed, both during and after construction, to reduce environmental and social impacts. These measures are monitored to ensure their proper functioning.

Results

The assessments ensure that new construction projects in the Cree communities minimize environmental and social impacts, all the while bringing economic benefit to the communities.
